My first Minhwa Painting !

After that slightly pensive visual treat about my roses yesterday, I am back today, and in high spirits, for I brought home today, my very first Korean 'Minhwa' painting !!!!! :-) I began learning this traditional form of Korean art a couple of weeks ago, and couldn't wait to share the results of my labour with you...I have always enjoyed painting and was so thrilled to see that there was an entirely new world of Korean art that was waiting for me to explore it !

'Jakhodo'
Minhwa (Korean Folk Painting)
Joseon Dynasty

Like it ?? :-) Let me tell you a little bit about the theme of my painting here. 'Jakhodo' is a genre of Korean folk painting that is composed of  a magpie sitting in a pine tree squawking above a tiger. The letter “jak” means magpie; “ho” means tiger; and “do” means painting.  The expression on the tiger’s face is usually comical. Korean folk belief was that tigers were messengers from mountain gods which were clever and capable of assisting human beings in driving away evil creatures and in doing so bring good luck, so in 'jakhodo' they are not represented to be fierce or threatening :-)

The magpie is a harbinger and symbol of good news in traditional Korean folklore.  They are also messengers of shrine deities capable of bestowing good luck. So in the paintings they act as messengers from the shrine gods capable of flying in any of the four directions to relay tidings and information to the tiger who can help humans by driving away evil spirits and bringing good luck.

So now am back to hunting for a good spot in our home to hang it once it is framed. I feel I genuinely brought a bit of Korea to our home today, that I can call 'my own' entirely :-) The better half is so thrilled that he is willing to swap it for all the other wall art we have at our place ! Reason enough to smile ? I say yes it is ! :-)

Have a great weekend then. And yes look forward to my post on the gorgeous Cherry Blossom soon ! :-)

  3. Gorgeous! Just gorgeous! Love the intricate detailing. It seems you have a natural gift karishma. Its obvious you've been painting for a while but now just adopting the Korean style. If you have other works please show us! And serious question - will you do a few works on commission? (perhaps we can move this part of the convo to email) My husband and I are really into art and Singapore doesn't really have anything 'local' to offer. We are all about local Asian influences.

  4. Dear Gayatri, as always, your comment has made my day ! :-) I am flattered. Yes I do enjoy painting. Those are the few hours of the week when time really flies for me, and I love my time with my brushes and the colour palette :-) Korean Minhwa was an absolute delight to discover. So glad you liked it. I am still learning the craft. and am currently working on a couple of more pieces. Will definitely share them with you since you appreciate the local essence. Always wonderful to connect with another art lover. My email is karishmabanerji@gmail.com. Thanks once again :-)
